Thoughts About THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

[from Its 2 Directors] The Roving Park Players announces the first show of our 10th season, Shakespeare’s THE COMEDY OF ERRORS. One of the Bard’s earliest plays and one of his silliest, it takes the dilemma of mistaken identity to new heights--take two sets of identical twins, shake vigorously; stir in a jealous wife, her dreamy sister, a wandering dad and a missing mom, and you‘ve got this farcical slapstick of mistaken identities. In this play it’s also possible to detect whispers of Commedia dell’Arte, a popular European theatrical form of the time which emphasized improvisation with broadly-drawn archetypal characters. Indeed, we were drawn to its expressive possibilities for our version, including the use of masks and small comic routines, or lazzi, that we’ve inserted randomly into the show to augment and enliven the action, as well as to underscore the oddness of the play’s premise. The question of identity is at the heart of this play, and despite its farcical nature, Shakespeare, being Shakespeare, can’t pass up the opportunity to examine what it is to be human. The play is filled with people who are trying to find themselves, both literally and figuratively, to discover that certain thing that will complete them. What might that be? Shakespeare asks the question; we and his characters must try to find the answer. Enjoy! ~ Vicki Harkovitch, 2008 /Lisa Shea-Blanchard, 2017
